Auburn doesn't need no has been/never was as HC. We've got Rhett for whenever Gus decides to retire. Muschamp can go play TV know it all with Mack Brown and the rest of those who can't cut it coaching.
Here's API's unconventional view on Boom, and other coaches that really know football, can get the best out of their players, and can game plan with the best of them: it's not always enough to actually RUN a D1 college football program. In today's world, you need a AD who's got your back. You need to be able to put a sentence together in a coherent manner. You have to be able to, and willing to, speak to alumni groups, quarterback clubs, the president of the university and the board. You must be able to recruit and also develop the players that you recruit. It also doesn't suck if you can develop a working relationship with the faculty. Running the program is a high wire act; and eventually the head coach is going to fall off. Happens. May or may not be your fault, but it's practically inevitable. If you've built up enough capital, you can climb back on and try again. At some point, three years, five years, 10 years, 15 years, the coach is going to get tired of the school or the school is going to get tired of you. Any you're done. Thank for for your service, it's time to go in another direction. Bobby Bowden stayed past his welcome in a program that he built from nothing. Joe Pa left under a cloud, and like 'da bearh', died shortly thereafter. I previously thought that Beamer could leave on his own terms, and now I don't think so.
Here is the really unconventional part. Guys like Boom, Shula, Chizik, T. Bowden, Archer, Sherill, and Tuberville can all coach. It just takes more than coaching to run a program. Boom is done, but is savvy enough not to say so. He'll get another chance, either as a coordinator or at a smaller program. I expect Chizik to return to coaching somewhere. Shula is still coaching in the league, and the NFL doesn't suffer incompetence. There are guys out there who won't get another shot, but Boom isn't one of them.
