My frustrations with AU Football of late are well documented. Also well documented is my dislike of the game of basketball. So, riding home tonight listening to some tunes got me thinking. One thought leads to another and it’s a veritable rabbit hole.
I like music. Good music performed by people with actual vocal and/or instrumental talent and ability. I maintain that there is simply no greater vocal collaboration than when EmmyLou Harris, Dolly Parton and Linda Rondstadt teamed up for their “Trio” cd’s. Three talented and vocally able people together creating some truly excellent music. If you listen to any song from either cd and disagree with me, then that just makes me wonder how many other topics about which you’re incorrect.
“Trio” is probably the largest collaboration (as I’m qualifying it for these thoughts) with the probable exception of the “Will the Circle Be Unbroken” cds by Nitty, Gritty Dirt Band which are also good examples but not necessarily great. Not great because while there is certainly talent aplenty to hear, most of that talent is instrumental as opposed to vocal.
Willie Nelson has produced a good bit of collaboration efforts (absolute best being “Two Men with the Blues” partnering with Wynton Marseilles) but as much of a fan as I am, he can’t sing well. He can write the hell out of a song and he’s a good performer but the man can’t sing. Sorry, disqualified.
For one-off’s; I’d include Billy Joel and Ray Charles with “Baby Grand” (where I make big allowances for the lesser vocal qualities) and Dolly Parton and Vince Gill with her “I Will Always Love You” as a duet.
Of course I’d include some of the Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett duet cds but I’d be very selective there.
So, what would you include? Keep in mind the actual talent requirement. Any suggestions which include the likes of Bono or Springsteen don’t qualify and are subject to ridicule.
