haven't had a mingleboy update because I've been avoiding him like the plague. he rode with me the other day and got to talkin about his latest problem. He now seems to think he is dating TWO women. I asked him if he's met either one in the flesh yet, his answer is no. He says his problem is that one lives in Nashville and the other lives way down in Stuart FL. I didn't tell him but in my opinion if his women are close to 1000 miles away and you've never met either one in the flesh, he has ZERO women. It makes my stomach hurt just thinkin about this and 40 year olds with smartphones dating scene.

I just told him I was from Nashville Man, he is gullible.

Cincy, I told my kids they were not having places that look like Southern Living. It was really amazing what some kids are doing and the parents are allowing it. I told my kids to find some concrete blocks and boards for their shelves. Isn't that what poor college students do? That's what happens when kids get trophies for everything....right Hoopie?

Not sure about the meat color they're bringing in, but if it's green... well I may just nibble at it to see if it's safe. If it's regular meat colored, I've got some jalapenos to make it green!

And adding on to the furniture thing - I went the way of the milk crate too. Unfortunately I couldn't complete the college ensemble with a spool. Not for lack of searching for one though.

I've always told my kids if you are standing up for yourself or someone else and you have no other options, do what you have to do and I'll deal with the administration. If it comes to a "zero tolerance" policy for fighting and my kid gets suspended, so be it. It's been proven time and time again, bullies understand pain and aren't apt to pursue it.

We might make it to the softball game tonight. If you see a blond 3 year old boy running around with a dad chasing him, with a prego mom watching the game, then you will know we made it.

We had a spool, too. And a "borrowed" garbage can from Auburn. After we had children, Mr. Cincy had a crisis of conscience and he and the children returned it. Also had a "borrowed" large orange construction cone. Boy, we were wild ones.

1. A 7 yr old in Md was suspended for pretending his POP-TART was a gun. According to the story he was eating the POP-TART and bit it in a certain way and thought it looked liked a gun.

I'm sure there are more to these stories that I don't know, but on the surface these appear to be injustices against these kids. As men it is in our blood to play cops/robbers or cowboys/Indians and such. Doing things like this doesn't make you a threat to anyone. Certainly if you are making threats of harm towards someone then it should be dealt with but all of this other nonsense has to stop. We are raising generations of pansies.

Meanwhile, bullying, which is a major factor in teen suicides, is frequently ignored.

I agree with all of this and most of what has already been talked about. I was bullied a good bit back in the day, and it helped me to make bigger friends it also helped me to think quicker and be smarter.

I am not a fan of the no tolerance rule. I only got in one real fight back in my day and it was not at school. I also remember older friends standing up for me, when I got older I would stand up for some of the younger kids, and not be scared I was going to be suspended. Again it was because we were able to work things out for our self. We did not run to any teachers, we did not fight but we found was to work it out.

when I was teaching high school for a few years I noticed the kids that had the most trouble handling the bullying were the ones that did not feel the love at home. For whatever reason the parents were not around as much or was busy doing their on thing. Those were the kids that were more on the suicidal side, or the type to bring a gun to school. As big as a problem there is at school with bullying and teen suicide, I also feel if parents would be parents at home and love on there kids that would remove more suicide then removing bullying.

I don't remember seein a whole lot of bullyin goin on when I was a kid. we usually culled our own nuts when things got outta hand. sometimes I think most of us kids that grew up in the 70s and 80s weren't as reliant on grownups havin to be around us all the time, kinda like Charlie Brown.

most of the bullyin I saw was on the after school special tv show. the one where the squirrely kid had to pay the big kid to protect him and then they became friends in the end. I think one of em lived in a bubble and had really nice hair until his dad hit it at the dinner table.

Speaking as someone who was really small for his age up until about 10th grade, I can tell you that there was plenty of bullying in the 70s and 80s. Fortunately, I was friends with most people and some of those friends were a lot bigger than me. Others were not so fortunate. Yes, we handled a lot of our own stuff back then and probably came out tougher for it, but some some really bad stuff that never got handled went on, too. There's no simple answer. I don't like the no tolerance stuff of today, but having it unnoticed or ignored like the old days is not ideal either. By the way, my son is also small for his age. He has my permission to defend himself, but I've also told him that being friends with most everyone is a pretty good idea.

Nova, I agree that we need to teach kids that it is not right to bully, but we also don't need to punish those who stand up for themselves. I'm with baldy1 that I am teaching my daughter to fight back only when necessary and I will deal with the consequences. If my daughter is bullied, sticks up for herself and is also punished I will take it as far as I can. You will read about the case one day, CHB vs XYZ Board of Education.
