Getting angry now because kids are holding us hostage is a little late to get mad. The time to get mad was when the NCAA was letting this happen.  I'll recall once again from 2 years ago when I was mad and complaining about what all was gonna transpire and got chastised with a "nothing to see here" comment.

Hate to say it, but this debacle is just getting started. There are essentially no rules, so this will be like the wild wild west ... only with attorneys/agents/carpetbaggers instead of guns. Within a year or so there will be lawsuits between players and the "collectives". Of course, attorneys will try to drag the schools and coaches into the lawsuits.

I truly only care about half as much about the AU football team as I did years ago. I have hardly any emotional investment. It's not Hugh's fault, but he had to hire a bunch of mercenaries to help us get to a 6-7 season. I watch and follow this circus now just for "bidness amusement" and to see/follow/ predict the machinations that are to come.

How about this for a forthcoming issue? I wonder who is advising theses kids? Do they have "NIL agents"? What % do those guys take? Can the NCAA prohibit such?  Have Jimmy Sexton, et al expanded their portfolio? 

"NIL agent" might not be a bad gig for some young slimy person to to pursue for a while to make some cheddar.

If I was at Maryland, I’d have a hard time convincing myself I should go to AU after witnessing in person how il-prepared AU was for the game vs Terps.

As a dad of an athlete, I’m happy about the whole NiL thing but it has opened a Pandora’s box that I suspect never closes again. And the ncaa can’t regulate things regardless of what they say. Everything is already happening thru back channels. Calls are made thru back channels and questions are asked and couched as “what if” scenarios.

Regarding the NIL agent question, athletes that are good have representation. Sports agents, some of whose names you know well, get involved (as “advisors”), legally (no $ is paid, and no contract is signed, it’s all verbal and ok to do), with these kids in HS. The “advisor” gets nothing until the kids become professionals. Advisor can’t buy the athlete financial benefit, can’t take ‘em to dinner, etc. They can get them athletic gear in college.

I don’t know about football but for baseball, they get approx 5% of the signing bonus when a kid gets signed, and then another payday with subsequent contracts. The athlete signs nothing with the advisor in HS/college. The advisors aren’t the ones that are dealing with the “what if” scenarios (for instance, “would you consider coming to another school after year 1”), as they’re supposed to steer clear of such. The agents are merely “advisors” during HS/college and help give advice on certain questions that arise. They also arrange to have pro teams come scout their clients and try to get a sense of where the athlete is viewed by those teams. It’s always good to know where a kid stands in the eyes of the teams looking at them so that’s helpful with decision making.

Once a kid is ready to turn pro, the advisor becomes the agent and gets on the payroll and handles contract negotiation and such. The fee % is reportedly negotiable, unless you’re the Sexton’s of the world.

No Ole Miss on the schedule this year, so not sure how I feel about this. Ole Miss is going to be a load for anybody that plays them this year, but if you're Ole Miss's opponent, that game suddenly got just a little bit more manageable. If Judkins had transferred to someone on our schedule, I would have vigorously protested.
