We are (most of us anyway) AU fans. We think AU is a great place. AU is not on the level, nor has it ever been on the level with about 15 big time programs in the country. You may want to think AU is, but we are not. We are not FL, USC, UGA, ND, Ohio St, Michigan, Tx, OK. We just aren't. I doubt we ever will be.
Historically...umm...yes...I believe we are. You only named eight programs there to begin with. If you want to talk about job attractiveness and current college football landscape, that's fine (For instance, Oregon is a better program than most listed here right now). We're not sitting at the big boy table, and that's fine (because we've still shown we can be the best in college football), but we qualify for top 15.
Quick, name the only BCS conference team (not counting current Pac-12 member Utah who did it twice as part of the MW) that has multiple undefeated seasons this century?
Hint. It's Auburn. Things aren't good right now, and I don't know when they'll be good again, but I don't have a problem calling Auburn a top fifteen program given what it's achieved.
Yes, we've had two undefeated teams in the past 12 years, which is awesome. It's those years that show how great the program can be. However, the frustrating part is that for some reason we can't consistently be a top 10 level team. It's always a surprise when we get those big seasons because in the years leading up to them we have been average. We don't want to be at the point that when we get to 7-0 in a season that people wonder where we came from. We want them to be thinking, Auburn is where it usually is at this point.
We also have 9 seasons with 4 or more losses during that same time span. Yes plenty of other teams have that or more, but if we are going to be the program that we want to be we have to get to the 10 win level and stay there for more than a season or two.
