I'm also a proud southern and I'll still stand for Dixie. But the battle flag has been irrevocably tarnished by its use as a racist symbol. If I wish to use a Confederate flag, I'll use the Stars and Bars. I laughed at all the fuss in Georgia about removing the battle flag. All they did was switch to essentially the Stars and Bars and everyone shut up.
But we have to be honest about the south. We do have a history of racism and segregation and that still lives on in many. Our symbols that you and I see as honoring those who fought to defend their homes are seen as symbols of oppression by others.
We also have to be honest about the level of homophobia (not a good word but the best I have for it) in Mississippi and most of the rest of the south. Mississippi, Alabama and Arkansas are probably the 3 least friendly states for LGBTs. Mississippi probably wins the dubious title of 1st. That's what Forde was implying. These kids have gotten this from their culture and their churches.
So it's not surprising this happened at Ole Miss and it wouldn't surprise me if it happened at almost any southern school, including Auburn. There was poll out a while back that was linked either here or the old HABOTN. Auburn was ranked as one of the least gay friendly campuses. I love Auburn but there's a lot of work to be done there as well.
I personally would be afraid to live openly in most of the south.
My buddy that I went to 6-12th grade with, and one of the nicest smartest people I know, moved away from Mobile to CA. He comes back with his significant other(s) who he has been with for probably 10 years during the holidays each year. He could probably pull off living in the south because he's not a "you can see him coming from around the corner" gay where the glitter, feathers and rainbows precede him. Incidentally, he went to bammer, edited their yearbook for two of the three years he was there, and graduated with a triple major in those three years. I don't think he ever realized they had a football team.
I try to keep my bigotry confined to hatred of self-imposed ignorance and stupidity and general uselessness to society regardless of race, religion or how ya swang.
and bammer. hate 'em.
