Really, your best bet is to go with Design/Build company since you are just doing more than basic constructing. That way you will know exactly what you are getting and be in better control of your budget rather than just willy-nilly picking things out as you go along. Hope that helps!!

Pfft,...who said anything about sticking to a budget. Just had someone do something similar to what I described, they were tired of their travertine. I didn't make the choices, but it actually turned out pretty well.

Another I did about a year ago was Quartz stone tile with a Glass tile wall . I do think I liked it better, different feel. Lots more $ however.

Well, AllenD when you find a decorator let me know. You are stepping on toes there. Most decorators don't have 4 year degrees much less 2 bachelors ~ one in Industrial Design.

I am an Interior Designer with a specialty in Kitchen and Bath design. I draw the blueprints and do the space planning as well a pick and spec all the products, moving plumbing and electrical and project manage what my construction crews are building. I have been working with a Design/Build group the last 8 years and am now on my own. Just finished designing/buying/installing cabinetry for a whole house renovation and now working on a 6,000 sqft "beach house" in Fl. I am redrawing all the kitchens (3) and bathrooms (9) to submit to the architect so that he can incorporate my drawings into his plans. Should I go on? As you can see that touches a nerve with me. Ask any Interior Designer about decorators. I can do the fou-fou part but that is such a small part of my job.

I have an acquaintance who is an interior designer. She went to a house construction site once to get a feel for things and kept the crew from making a major mistake. They were about to pitch the roof wrong.

She may have done other things like that, but that's the only one I heard about.

Interior Designers are fiesty. One of the best legislative battles of my career was watching the architects and the interior designers square off over a bill. I thought someone was gonna get stabbed with the business end of a compass.

Yes, Jet that is definitely correct!! But there is also a fight going on with the commercial designers vs the kitchen/bath designers also which is pretty comical in itself. All goes back to the fact that the architects don't want designers to draw "stamped" plans and encroach on their domain. That's one reason in Europe they are called Interior Architects. That's why I have to draw them to be incorporated into the architects' plans. I'm too old to worry about all that mess ~ I'll let the young ones fight that battle.

I have enough to worry about with hiring a new coach for Auburn football!! ;D

Long distance design is pretty easy these days with all the computer technology but there are definitely Certified Kitchen and Bath Designers in your area if you want to check www.NKBA.org for professionals in your area. If not, I can always look at what you've got........ my website is back up and running.....or just PM.

As a Licensed Commercial General Contractor with a pretty extensive background in homebuilding, I deal with everybody - meaning all levels of designer, architect, decorator, space planners, engineers, even owners, etc.... and no matter the title some are good (or very good) and some are meh. I'm sorry that I stepped on toes by inferring a title less than you have achieved. .....

As you know, many people drawing houseplans are not architects. Home Design doesn't require it. Yet to build that home requires a licensed contractor. Go figure.

I'll answer to nearly anything - the things being married a buncha years will do to you.
