Well, yesterday certainly sucked. Clay Travis, the intentionally controversial sports blogger/attorney/outkickyourcoverage guy said that AU fans had turned on Gus after the game. I'm sure that some did. He also called us the most irrational fan base in college football. I hope that's not true.
Sure I wanted to win the bowl game and be ranked higher than bamer at the end of the season. That doesn't seem likely at this point. We just got flat out whipped on both lines of scrimmage. The only the adjustment I saw was the intentional roll out pass to the right for Bo in the 2nd half to avoid the inevitable pressure that he was sure to get up the middle. While there were many disappointments this season, there have also been quite a few joys. We'll always have Oregon and Iron Bowl to pleasantly think back upon.
Looking ahead, the O-line that has been the mill stone around our neck for two years will have to be almost completely re-built. If Boobee hasn't figured out how to tote the rock and not fumble in the two years experience he's had, it's time to sit or transition to outside line backer. Gus's "bet on himself" approach to this season has been a partial success. He has not however banked enough cred to sail thru 2020 unimpeded. He'll have to coach for his job yet again. The early measuring stick will be against UNC in the Benz, followed by a trip to play Lane Kiffen in Oxford. Then UK comes to town followed by an October trip to Athens GA, and then home against aTm. Of those only the UNC and UGA games are losable if we want to be in contention for the SECCG. We'll finish with a home back to back with LSU and bamer. Of course any loss to a non con scrub, Misstake, or Arky and the long knives will come out again.
We have recruiting part deux next month, followed by spring practice. If we don't have some semblance of a functioning O-line coming out of spring practice trouble is sure to follow. No idea of what the Morris effect will be on the offense. I don't really care who calls the plays as long as it works. There is also the oft rummored retirement of JB Grimes. If I'm Kendal Simmons, having to re-build an O-line from scratch is not how I'd want to start my coaching career. Stay tuned Auburn fans, there are lots of moving parts to follow. As always, fight on.
