I'm sure the players will use this as motivation, but I don't see Gurley's comments as all that bad. Haven't we been basically saying same thing? Last year, Auburn's players had zero confidence by the time Georgia came around. They have a different attitude (or "energy" as Gurley put it) this year, even though many of the same players are around. I do think that the offseason program made many of our players stronger, and we do have some new faces, but by and large I think much of the improvement has been mental.
But don't let any of my reasoning get in the way of Auburn players feeling slighted. My thoughts are just between me and you people.
I don't know if his comments will move the players's motivation meter even one click (if you need this stuff to get fired up to play in the SEC then you got a problem) but he certainly got me all fired up!). I may go slap a dawg at lunch. I may need someone to bail me out of jail this afternoon.
Hopefully our players' reading comprehension is on the same level as yours, badly1. But from the context, Gurley clarifies that by saying "the same defense", he means the same players. If he thinks it's the same scheme, then he needs to go back to peewee football 101... and we should feel sorry for him and his lack of intelligence.
His point is that they've had success on these players before, so they plan on having success on them again, regardless of Auburn's record, ranking, and position as the favorite. I would approve of the same sort of attitude from Auburn players in the same position, though I would prefer they word it more eloquently so that people don't turn it into a slap in the face.
